Folkston, Georgia Concentration Camp - Part 3 of 3

Brief RECAP:

Georgia, where I live, will soon have the one of the largest Ice Processing Centers (Concentration Camp) in the country.  It will be in Folkston, Georgia in Charlton County, near the Florida border.

There are plenty of folks to contact about this, so it's divided into 3 posts.

In the first post, I focused on the company that runs the facility - Geo Group.

In the second post, I focused on Folkston and Charlton County.

This post focuses on the primary elected officials in Georgia.

The Governor of Georgia

Brian Kemp (Republican)

Georgia Senators

When Warnock and Ossoff were elected, I was very excited.  We needed more Dems in the senate.  However, since trump was elected they have split from the party lines a time or two, notably when they and 10 other Democrats voted for the Laken Riley Act.  At first glance, this act might seem like an OK thing and Laken Riley, a 22-year-old Augusta University nursing student, was a Georgian.  However, the act goes too far and puts immigrants more at risk.  It feels like Ossify and Warnock were putting politics ahead of doing what is right.

The Laken Riley Act: What It Means for Immigrants

  • The Laken Riley Act was introduced as a response to the murder of Laken Riley, allegedly committed by an undocumented immigrant with a prior criminal history.
  • While the Act was introduced as a measure to crack down on crime committed by undocumented immigrants, its broad language and enforcement mechanisms pose significant risks for individuals with legal status.
  • Mandatory detention provisions assume guilt before a conviction, contradicting the core principle of “innocent until proven guilty.”
  • The inclusion of theft-related charges and other non-violent offenses raises concerns about whether immigrants will be disproportionately targeted for low-level crimes that would not usually lead to severe penalties.
