Darren Beattie and The US Institute of Peace

The topic of this postcard is mostly Darren Beattie.  This is another situation where after doing the research behind the story, I feel dirty and disgusted just from reading about this guy.  What a sorry excuse for a human.

After doing the research (scroll down to see The Back Story), I struggled with who to send a postcard to.  It's pretty clear, Beattie and the folks he works closely with wouldn't care.  It seems like being a misogynistic racist is no problem with this administration.  In fact, it's looking a lot like it might be a point of pride.

Liberals who pay attention probably already know this stuff.  It feels like I'm just throwing my hands up in the air on this one and sending it out hoping that somewhere along the way, someone will read it and become curious.

I decided to send a card straight to the Institute of Peace.  It's possible there are a few decent folks still there holding the fort.  If so, I want them to know that what's going on is noticed.

The Back Story on Darren Beattie

Darren is the founder of Revolver News, a far right website.  Media Bias / Fact Check describes them as - "a questionable source", "low credibility",  and "most stories favor the right and frequently utilize loaded emotional headlines and wording".  Beattie is big on conspiracy theories about the Jan 6 insurrection.

During trump's first term, Beattie was fired as a White House speechwriter for attending a gathering of white supremacists.  There were still some checks and balances in place back then.

When reading various articles, there are a number outrageous remarks and tweets that were often quoted.

  • He told various Black people — including Republican Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina — to "learn their place" and "take a knee to MAGA." (Jan, 2021)
  • “Population control? If only! Higher quality humans are subsidizing the fertility of lower quality humans.” (May 2024)
  • “Competent white men must be in charge if you want things to work. Unfortunately, our entire national ideology is predicated on coddling the feelings of women and minorities, and demoralizing competent white men.”  That ought to make perfectly clear where he stands and what kind of person he is.  (Oct 2024)
  • Beattie voiced support for mass sterilization of "low-IQ trash," complaining, "Higher quality humans are subsidizing the fertility of lower quality humans." (2024)

In February, he was named the acting undersecretary for public diplomacy and public affairs.  Marco Rubio, Beattie's current boss, defended his appointment even though Beattie tweeted about Secretary of State Rubio having a "low I.Q." and possibly being gay.  Those tweets have been deleted.

Now, as of July 26th, he has been additionally appointed acting president of the U.S. Institute of Peace, according to the State Department.  The Institute of Peace is an "independent nonprofit that supports diplomatic solutions to global conflicts. It receives funding from Congress, but it is not a federal agency."   "It was founded as an independent, non-profit think tank. It is funded by Congress to promote peace and prevent and end conflicts across the globe."

Earlier this year, DOGE  seized control of the institute’s building, citing an executive order from President Trump, then gutted it. You may remember the story about how people in the building valiantly tried to block DOGE, but ultimately were overpowered.   The fired staff sued.  A Federal judge overturned the takeover and firings.  The administration appealed and then a federal appeals court "returned control of the building to the administration while the case was under review."   It doesn't appear this was ever settled.

Beattie was appointed by the Institute of Peace’s board of directors.  That board includes Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.  Most of the previous board had been fired.

The Maddow Blog noted that Beattie's comments are good reasons to keep this guy out of our government, but instead he gets a promotion.  It's clear, the administration has no problem with Beattie's views.

Holiday Cards

Credit for this idea goes to the wonderful leader of the Indivisible group I belong to.   She regularly takes photos at our protests.  She uses her phone for some of the photos but always asks if people would like her to take a photo using their phone.  Knowing that we are on the lookout for different ways to get our messages out to others, she thought about using protest photos on holiday cards.

If you do personalized photo cards each year, maybe you can use some photos on your card from the protests you attend.  If that appeals to you, be sure to begin taking plenty of photos NOW so you'll have some good ones.

I did a super quick sample card using some random photos I found online.  There are many options for doing this.  You could have photos of you and your friends and family holding signs.  You could take photos of your favorite signs and just use those without people's faces.  You could create a collage with many photos or just use one that is awesome.  If you do a collage, you could use all photos from protests or just a few of them included along with vacation snapshots or whatever.

The signs in the photos could be messages of hope, witty and fun, or deep and important - whatever you like.  Maybe there's a specific message that you would like the people in your life to hear.  Having a photo that includes a prominent sign with that message would be an easy way to get that message out.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Have you noticed that these days, whenever people are afraid of someone in power, they put on a deliberate and ongoing campaign of smear tactics?  It seems to work especially well on women.  Women tend to be judged by standards that shift with the wind.  Hillary was smeared until many, even those who should know better because they understand the tactics, were swayed.  Another is Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.  But, in this volatile political climate, her voice is resonating stronger and stronger.  She never tucks her tail and retreats.  She pushes and pushes and pushes.  She doesn't stop calling out the insanity.  She is strong, and since her beginnings were humble, she understands the struggles so many are facing.  She has empathy in a time when most politicians are showing they believe in the mantra, "Greed is Good."

I have been mired in really dark topics these last weeks.  Between the war on innocent immigrants and the plethora of sexual predators and pedophiles, I found myself feeling overwhelmed with darkness.  It's important to keep going, but to put my energy back in check, I decided to show my thanks.  I've already done a couple thank you cards - to Gavin Newsome and Greyhound.  I plan to do more of them in the future.  Messages of thanks are valuable, too!

Today, a thank you card for AOC is my focus and it sure made me feel lighter.    I can think of many people who seem to be doing things, big and small, that seem like they've been preparing for for years.  Sometimes I feel like I have been preparing for my small contributions for years.  My interest in history, especially times of resistance to dictators, has helped me see the dangers of this time.  My love of arts and crafts has given me one point of focus.  My interest in civil rights leaders and women's rights leaders has helped me understand that I have to keep going, even when it all feels overwhelming.  When enough of us do what we are meant to do, we will reverse the course this country is on.

AOC inspires me.  She makes me proud.  She gives me hope for the future.  She will still be there when many of the greedy old, white racists are gone.

Chuck Schumer and "Cats"

In the previous post, I talked about being curious about why New York grocery chain owner was a big donor to Brian Jack, a 36 year old guy running to be a Georgia Congressman for the first time.  I read through a number of articles looking for clues.

One article that came up left me a bit shocked, but served to reinforce my low opinion of Schumer - Chuck Schumer, Anthony Weiner, Bill de Blasio attend John Catsimatidis 76th birthday and WABC radio gala.  There was Schumer partying it up with Cats (that's what many call him).  Bill O’Reilly and Jeanine Pirro were also at the bash.  Great.  No wonder Schumer doesn't always seem to be looking out for our best interests.

Honestly, I only have a handful of politicians I trust now and I'm afraid to put too much faith in even them for fear of having my heart broken any further.  As for Schumer, I haven't had any faith in him for some time.  Also more and more, the saying, "There are no ethical billionaires" echoes through my head as I learn more about the scoundrels running our country.

John "Cats" Catsimatidis and Chuck Schumer at the the birthday bash

Repeat from yesterday in case you don't know this about Cats - According to a Business Insider article, "Billionaires Carl Icahn and John Catsimatidis appear in Jeffrey Epstein's 1997 address book."  You can bypass the paywall for a quick peak by using Archive Today.

It's worth your time to skim through the campaign finance info on Chuck Schumer on Open Secrets.  Obviously, he'd never vote to get rid of big money in politics.

Brian Jack, Georgia Congressman District 3

Brian Jack was elected to represent Georgia's 3rd district in 2024.

"A 36-year-old Peachtree City native, Jack was the political director in Trump’s White House and later worked for U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Trump’s repeated endorsement and access to McCarthy’s fundraising network carried Jack to victory in a crowded Republican primary." - WSB

Jack served as a campaign advisor to both President-elect Donald Trump’s 2016 and 2024 campaigns. - The Georgia Sun

Jack is rather proud of his closeness with Trump and as noted in an AP article, "When asked during the Sunday debate whether there was anything that he differed with Trump on — such as how Trump responded as a mob stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021 — Jack instead emphasized that voters should view electing him and Trump as a package deal to return to Trump’s policies on economic issues, immigration and public safety."

Running as an “America First” candidate, Jack raised significantly more than his Democratic opponent Maura Keller. - The Georgia Sun

I took a look at some of the donations made to Jack on OpenSecrets.  He sure didn't seem to have many contributions from locals.

His top contributor was American Israel Public Affairs Committee.  - Open Secrets 1

Over a million dollars was spent on media.  - OpenSecrets 2

Open Secrets has a number of pages on Brian Jack and as I went through this one, I started wondering about some of the contributors.   I started looking up a few.  What the hell is "Gristedes & D'Agostino Supermarkets" about?  We don't have any of those in Georgia.  Why would a New York Supermarket chain be interested in a Georgia Congressional District?  John A. Catsimatidis (aka "Cats") owns the supermarket chain.  He's a billionaire, of course, and has his hands in a number of other businesses.  At one time, he had been a big Bill Clinton supporter, but when Trump came along, he became a big donor to him.  Hmmm.  What famous deceased friend do Clinton and Trump have in common?

INTERESTING - According to a Business Insider article, "Billionaires Carl Icahn and John Catsimatidis appear in Jeffrey Epstein's 1997 address book."  You can bypass the paywall for a quick peak by using Archive Today.

In Jack's defense, The Washingtonian reported, "He’s lost control: Late on Wednesday, three Republicans—Nancy Mace, Scott Perry, and Brian Jack—voted with Democrats on a House subcommittee to subpoena the Justice Department’s files on its investigation into disgraced, deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein despite President Trump‘s attempts to force his party to move on from the topic."

I'm not sure what this all means, but the way business interests are usually way more important than the interests of the people politicians are SUPPOSED to represent, is certainly wreaking havoc these days.

Epstein Justice is dedicated to exposing and prosecuting Jeffrey Epstein's Pedophile Network.  They give his contact info and list him as "Not Committed", but the pressure is on!

Folkston, Georgia Concentration Camp - Part 3 of 3

Brief RECAP:

Georgia, where I live, will soon have the one of the largest Ice Processing Centers (Concentration Camp) in the country.  It will be in Folkston, Georgia in Charlton County, near the Florida border.

There are plenty of folks to contact about this, so it's divided into 3 posts.

In the first post, I focused on the company that runs the facility - Geo Group.

In the second post, I focused on Folkston and Charlton County.

This post focuses on the primary elected officials in Georgia.

Georgia Senators

When Warnock and Ossoff were elected, I was very excited.  We needed more Dems in the senate.  However, since trump was elected they have split from the party lines a time or two, notably when they and 10 other Democrats voted for the Laken Riley Act.  At first glance, this act might seem like an OK thing and Laken Riley, a 22-year-old Augusta University nursing student, was a Georgian.  However, the act goes too far and puts immigrants more at risk.  It feels like Ossify and Warnock were putting politics ahead of doing what is right.

The Laken Riley Act: What It Means for Immigrants

  • The Laken Riley Act was introduced as a response to the murder of Laken Riley, allegedly committed by an undocumented immigrant with a prior criminal history.
  • While the Act was introduced as a measure to crack down on crime committed by undocumented immigrants, its broad language and enforcement mechanisms pose significant risks for individuals with legal status.
  • Mandatory detention provisions assume guilt before a conviction, contradicting the core principle of “innocent until proven guilty.”
  • The inclusion of theft-related charges and other non-violent offenses raises concerns about whether immigrants will be disproportionately targeted for low-level crimes that would not usually lead to severe penalties.

Folkston, Georgia Concentration Camp - Part 2 of 3

Folkston, Georgia Concentration Camp - Part 2 of 3

Brief RECAP:

Georgia, where I live, will soon have one of the largest Ice Processing Centers (Concentration Camp) in the country.  It will be in Folkston, Georgia in Charlton County, near the Florida border.
Part 1 has a ton of information about this.

There are plenty of folks to contact about this, so I'm dividing it into 3 posts. In yesterday's post, I focused on the company that runs the facility - Geo Group.

Today, I am focusing on Folkston and Charlton County.

The whole area will make a ton of money off of this project and it will produce jobs as well.  However the money and jobs are gained by running a concentration camp. There are always ways to make money that decent people would not do.  Folkston is crossing a line.  The people benefitting from ill-gotten gains will be judged by this.  History will not be kind to them.  They say money is the root of all evil and it sure seems we have an abundance of evil in our country these days.

District 1 in Georgia, where the Folkston concentration camp is located, also includes Savannah, Tybee Island, Jekyll Island, Sapelo Island, St. Simons Island, parts of the Okefenokee.  I've always loved that part of Georgia and had been hoping to go there for a getaway this fall.  Now, the thought of going there makes me ill.    I can't in good conscience give them my money unless I see MAJOR pushback by the decent people in the area.  I do realize that there must be plenty of people in the area who are against this.  I need to see them speaking up.  If they are sitting quietly, that's being complicit.

I have heard Buddy Carter's name a number of times recently and it's never in a positive light.  He's the Congressman for District 1.  I will be closely watching the next election there to see how the people of Savannah are feeling.

Folkston, Georgia Concentration Camp - Part 1 of 3

It's hard to believe this is The United States.  I hesitate to call it that anymore because we are anything but united.  I never would have dreamed we would have concentration camps in our country and that we would be fighting fascism.  Yet, here we are.

Sadly, Georgia, where I live, will soon have one of the largest ICE Processing Center (Concentration Camp) in the country.  It will be in Folkston, Georgia in Charlton County, near the Florida border.

There has been an ICE center there since 2017 with 1100 beds, but it will be expanding to around 3,000 beds.  The AJC says the expansion will go from 780 to 3,018.   The city of Folkston (population 4,464) will receive $600,000 a year in revenue from water and sewer services, but that's the tip of the iceberg.  Every article I read seemed very proud of how much money and how many jobs it would bring to the area and they all touted different figures.

There are plenty of folks to contact about this concentration camp, so I'm going to divide it up into 3 posts.

In this first post, I will focus on the company that runs the facility - Geo Group, Inc.

The facility is run by The Geo Group and is one of 20 for-profit ICE detention centers they run.  Even though they are accused of many violations, they were awarded the expansion.  - ICE finds violations at Folkston detention center but continues to contract with The GEO Group

In 2024, the GEO Group reported $2.4 billion in revenue.  The AJC says "by some estimates, Folkston's immigration detention center is expected to create an estimated economic impact of $42 million for the region and $21 million in revenue for Geo."   These people don't seem to be bothered that their money will be made off the suffering of others.

It's very disheartening to think our tax dollars are being used to fund this travesty.

Geo Group donates to lots of politicians (Republican and Dem)  in Georgia

Geo Group donations - Open Secrets  Click the heading, AMOUNT, to sort from highest to lowest.  Geo definitely knows where their bread is buttered.  Click by date to sort from most recent (you may need to click twice).  Scroll down a bit and you'll see some Democrats, too, mostly in Georgia.

Private Prison Company GEO Group “Excited” About Mass Deportation - VERY INTERESTING ARTICLE!

  • "Pam Bondi, the U.S. Attorney General, is a former GEO Group lobbyist." She is connected to so many heinous things.
  • ""The company is under contract with ICE for 16,000 beds, which Donahue said is “the highest level of utilization in over five years.”
  • "ICE has just under 48,000 beds nationwide, and the agency estimates that the Laken Riley Act could require as many as 110,000 additional beds."  - Remember, Ossify and Warnock both voted with Republicans FOR The Laken Riley Act!!!
  • "GEO Group has approximately 3,000 beds available to facilities currently under contract with the U.S. Marshals Service and is in “active discussions” with ICE and the Marshals Service about another 6,500 beds."
  • "ICE also awarded the company a 15-year contract worth an estimated $1 billion to reopen Delaney Hall, an immigrant lock-up in Newark, New Jersey. "

Geo Group (GEO) wants to cash in on Trump’s immigration crackdown

  • "Donahue noted that Geo Group was awarded a 15-year contract in Q1 by ICE to provide a federal immigration processing center at its 1,000-bed facility in New Jersey.  The contract could generate $60 million in annualized revenues, according to Donahue."
  • "The company is also negotiating a multi-year contract with ICE to provide similar services at its 1,800-bed facility in Michigan, which Donahue said could generate in excess of $70 million in annualized revenues."
  • "Once these are secured, Donahue said the total revenue from its work with ICE could generate annual revenues of $500 million to $600 million."
  • Geo Group’s GPS tracking technology is also being heavily utilized by ICE to track down immigrants, making the company one of the “big business winners” of the Trump administration’s immigration policies, according to The New York Times."
  • "Geo Group’s role in the Trump’s administration’s immigration crackdown has gotten blowback from liberal lawmakers in the U.S., including Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who accused the administration of “funneling money to private prison companies.”"

It's also interesting that just before Trump took office, Geo-Group had a major CEO change.  Corporate news was already talking about setting up detention centers at that point.  So, I wondered, who is this new CEO, and what is his connection to the people in power?

James David Donahue
J. David Donahue, with over 40 years of experience in corrections, replaced Brian Evans as CEO of Geo Group, effective January 1, 2025, under a two-year contract with a $1 million annual salary and additional benefits.  Trump had won at that point and they knew the corruption camp business was about to take off.

I couldn't find much about J David's personal life.  I looked and looked.  All that I found were articles about his work profile.  I highly suspect someone with skills had scrubbed the internet clean of all traces of his personal details.  All that's left is work-related. This guy flies under the radar.

I did find his age - 65 - on an SEC filing and felt like I'd won the search engine lottery.  Unfortunately for me, the filing showed David "has no family relationships required to be disclosed pursuant to Item 401(d) of Regulation S-K."

Geo Group CEO Evans to retire, Donahue named successor

J David Donahue is the SVP-Corrections & Detention of The GEO Group Inc and owns about 45,750 shares of The GEO Group Inc (GEO) stock worth over $1 Million.

Mitch McConnell - They'll Get Over It!

In a private meeting amid Republicans’ scramble to pass their budget reconciliation bill (aka the BIG UGLY BILL), McConnell tried to calm the fears of senators facing blowback.

There are many articles about it including this one - from MSNBC.

As for the bill itself, this article is informative  - When does the One Big Beautiful Bill take effect?

This kerfuffle is a couple of weeks old.  I wish I had been able to get it out sooner, but maybe it's good to keep reminding folks that the ugly results of that bill will trickle to us slowly and the Republicans on the hill are hoping that just like the fable about frogs in water that heats up slowly, most people won't notice until it's too late.

Accuweather - Privatizing the National Weather Service

Quote from The Atlantic, The MAGA Plan to End Free Weather Reports -
"Privatizing the weather is not a new conservative aim. Nearly two decades ago, when the National Weather Service updated its website to be more user-friendly, Barry Myers, then executive vice president of AccuWeather, complained to the press that “we work very hard every day competing with other companies, and we also have to compete with the government.” In 2005, after meeting with a representative from AccuWeather, then-Senator Rick Santorum introduced a bill calling for the NWS to cease competition with the private sector, and reserve its forecasts for commercial providers. The bill never made it out of committee. But in 2017, Trump picked Myers to lead NOAA. (Myers withdrew his nomination after waiting two years for Senate confirmation.)"

Accuweather has a page devoted to this - "AccuWeather Chief Executive Officer Steven R. Smith said “AccuWeather does not agree with the view, and AccuWeather has not suggested, that the National Weather Service (NWS) should fully commercialize its operations. The authors of ‘Project 2025’ used us as an example of forecasts and warnings provided by private sector companies without the knowledge or permission of AccuWeather.”

Alligator Auschwitz

I find it appalling that our country now has concentration camps where immigrants are sent without any semblance of due process.  So many in the faux news vacuum think only criminals are being sent, but anyone who looks beyond corporate news understands that even those with correct documentation are not safe.  Racial profiling is the driving factor.  Honorable, hardworking people are being swept up by masked men without identification or warrants.  It's beyond disgusting.

I decided to go after some of the contractors getting rich off of the concentration camps, particularly Alligator Auschwitz in Florida.

These companies are participating in the building and/or maintenance of Alligator Auschwitz

Contractors building Alligator Alcatraz have donated money to Florida GOP, DeSantis - Miami Herald

Republican donors and Florida’s hurricane know-how helped build ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ so quickly -AP News.  I am not happy with their article title.  The article has some good facts including a section, GOP donors will get paid for ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ work, but the article title makes it sound as if we should applaud the contractors.  Ugh.

Lisa Murkowski and The Big Ugly Bill

Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins often express concern and say they are uncertain, but they always are in lock step with whatever awful thing Republicans are trying to pull off.  They only vote against a measure if the outcome of the vote is safely locked in.  Murkowski's vote made the vote a tie.  Vance had to be called in to break the tie.

This is a snippet from The Contrarian chat on Bluesky.
